EXERCISE #12: The Chaos Drill

Mindset Exercise: The Chaos Drill

This week, you’re going to simulate an unpredictable challenge in a workout and practice mental recalibration.

Step 1: Pick a Key Workout to Disrupt

Choose a bike, run, or swim session where you expect to push yourself. Then, introduce an unexpected challenge:

🔹 Run/Bike: Change the pacing or terrain halfway through.
🔹 Swim: Change the stroke pattern or add random surges.
🔹 Brick Workout: Start the run with heavier-than-expected legs.

Step 2: Apply the “Next Best Decision” Mindset

When the challenge occurs, pause for 3-5 seconds and ask:

1. What’s happening? (Assess, don’t panic.)
2. What’s my best next move? (Decide, don’t complain.)
3. Can I reframe this as an opportunity? (Use it as fuel, not frustration.)

By training yourself to adapt under pressure, you’ll develop the ability to stay in control when race-day chaos inevitably strikes.

Final Thought: Unshakable Athletes Win

Your ability to stay calm and execute under unexpected pressure is what separates strong athletes from elite ones.

Prepare for adversity. Expect the unexpected. And when it happens—stay sharp, stay calm, and take the next best step.
