The Fixed Mindset vs. The Growth Mindset

Psychologist Carol Dweck’s research on mindset reveals two types of athletes:

🔹 Fixed Mindset Athletes believe their abilities are set. They think:

  • “I’m either good at this or I’m not.”
  • “If I have to work this hard, maybe I’m not talented enough.”
  • “I don’t want to look weak by struggling.”

🔹 Growth Mindset Athletes see training as a process. They think:

  • “Every challenge is making me stronger.”
  • “Effort is how I get better, not proof that I’m not good enough.”
  • “Struggle is part of progress.”

If you’re a Driven Competitor, your natural intensity works to your advantage—but only if you see effort as part of the process, not a sign of weakness.

A fixed mindset will get you through short-term challenges, but a growth mindset will make you unstoppable over time.

The Driven Competitor often puts too much emphasis on results instead of the process. But here’s the truth: elite athletes aren’t the ones who never struggle—they’re the ones who don’t let struggle define them.
