EXERCISE #5: Writing Your Setback Story

Practice: Writing Your Setback Story

On your mindset practice day, set aside 15-20 minutes to reflect on a recent setback in your training. Use the following prompts to write about it as if you were telling the story of your own growth.

Step 1: The Challenge

  • What was the difficult experience? (A bad workout? A race that didn’t go as planned? An injury?)
  • What emotions did it bring up for you?

Step 2: The Perspective Shift

  • If you were writing a book about your journey, how would this setback contribute to the story?
  • If a close friend experienced this, what advice would you give them?
  • What is one lesson you can take from this experience?

Step 3: The Next Chapter

  • How do you want to respond moving forward?
  • What is one small step you can take to turn this into a growth opportunity?

This practice helps you separate your identity from your setbacks and frame challenges as part of your journey, not the end of it.

Closing Thought:

You are not just training your body—you are shaping your story. You are building resilience, strength, and a mindset that will serve you far beyond sport. Setbacks will come, but they do not define you. What defines you is how you respond.

Now, go write the next chapter.
