How to Qualify for Kona in 2026: IRONMAN World Championship Qualifying, Explained
Last updated: October 2026. Rules checked against ironman.com in October 2026.
Since the 2026 qualifying cycle, Kona slots no longer follow age-group size, and there is no qualifying time to chase. The 2026 race on October 10 closes out a cycle: every qualifying race on IRONMAN's current list now awards slots to the 2027 IRONMAN World Championship. This page explains how qualifying works right now, with links to IRONMAN's official pages for every rule.
Already qualified? This page covers how to earn a slot. For racing Kona itself, see the 2026 Kona Playbook: race-week and race-day execution and QT2 Kona Race Expert (free race-execution guidance).
How do you qualify for Kona?
Most age-group triathletes qualify for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona by earning a slot at a designated qualifying IRONMAN race, either by winning their age group or by ranking high enough in their gender's age-graded performance pool, and then accepting that slot in person at the race's roll-down ceremony.
- Automatic slot. Each men's and women's age group at a qualifying race has one slot for its winner. If the winner declines, it rolls to 2nd, then 3rd place. (IRONMAN Age Group Qualification)
- Performance pool. All other slots are split into a men's pool and a women's pool. Athletes in each pool are ranked by age-graded time, and slots are offered down the list until they are taken. (IRONMAN slot allocation explainer)
- Accept in person. You must attend the roll-down ceremony and pay in full when your name is called. IRONMAN's 2027-cycle rules require athletes to "personally attend" the ceremony. (IRONMAN Age Group Qualification)
There is no fixed qualifying time. IRONMAN says its age-group factor, the Kona Standard, "is not a cutoff time," and that there are no definitive time benchmarks by race.
When is the IRONMAN World Championship in 2026 and 2027?
The 2026 IRONMAN World Championship is on Saturday, October 10, 2026, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, with men and women racing on the same day, and IRONMAN lists the 2027 race for Saturday, October 9, 2027.
IRONMAN says the 2026 race brings nearly 3,000 athletes and is the first single-day championship since 2019 (race page; Kona FAQs). Qualifying for 2026 is finished. Every race on IRONMAN's 2027 qualifying events list awards slots to the October 9, 2027 race, which IRONMAN's athlete guides place in Kona.
What changed since 2023
In 2023, for the first time, IRONMAN split the championship across two locations: the 2023 men's race was in Nice, France, and the 2024 women's race was in Nice, with the other race in Kona each year. In 2025 the women raced in Kona and the men in Nice. In April 2025, IRONMAN announced that from 2026 Kona would be the exclusive host of a single-day race with men and women together. Nice keeps the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in 2026 and 2028. (IRONMAN announcement, Apr 30, 2025; 2026 Qualification Update)
How are Kona slots allocated at a qualifying race?
Each qualifying race gets a fixed number of age-group slots: one automatic slot for the winner of each men's and women's age group, with the rest split into separate men's and women's performance pools based on how many eligible men and women start.
Automatic slots
Before the race, every age group with at least one athlete represented is assigned one automatic slot. At the awards, it is offered to the winner. If the winner declines (or already holds a slot), it goes to 2nd place, then 3rd. It never rolls past 3rd within the age group. If none of the top three accepts, the slot moves into that gender's performance pool. (IRONMAN Age Group Qualification)
Performance pool
All remaining slots go to the performance pools. Since November 2025, there are two pools, one for men and one for women, each sized by that gender's share of eligible age-group starters on race day. Within each pool, athletes are ranked by age-graded time and slots are offered "first to accept" down the list until every slot is taken. (slot allocation explainer)
IRONMAN made the gender split on November 14, 2025, after finding that one-third of the way through the 2026 cycle, 96% of performance pool slots had gone to men. At the same time, unclaimed winner slots began staying within their gender, and IRONMAN applied the changes retroactively to races already held. (2026 Qualification Update)
A worked example (IRONMAN's own numbers)
IRONMAN uses IRONMAN California, with 55 slots, to show how it works (source):
- The start line was 19.5% women and 80.5% men, with 11 women's and 13 men's age groups represented: 24 automatic slots.
- The other 31 slots went to the pools: 6 for women (31 × 19.5%, rounded) and 25 for men (31 × 80.5%, rounded).
- At the ceremony, two women's age groups declined their automatic slots, which moved into the women's pool (6 + 2 = 8).
- Final split: 17 slots to women (9 automatic, 8 pool) and 38 to men (13 automatic, 25 pool).
What is the Kona Standard, and what time do I need?
There is no official Kona qualifying time; IRONMAN multiplies each finish time by an age-group "Kona Standard" factor and ranks athletes within their gender by that age-graded time.
Each factor comes from the average of the top 20% of Kona finish times for that age group and gender over a rolling five editions, compared with the fastest age group (M30-34 and F30-34, both set at 1.0000). A lower factor means a bigger adjustment. (IRONMAN Age Group Qualification)
| Age group | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| 30-34 | 1.0000 | 1.0000 |
| 40-44 | 0.9683 | 0.9699 |
| 50-54 | 0.9002 | 0.9051 |
| 55-59 | 0.8667 | 0.8665 |
| 60-64 | 0.8262 | 0.8041 |
Selected factors from IRONMAN's current table. See the full Kona Standard table for every age group.
How the math works, using IRONMAN's example: a 42-year-old woman who finishes IRONMAN California in 9:19:51 has an age-graded time of 9:03:00 (9:19:51 × 0.9699). A 55-year-old woman who finishes in 9:47:20 has an age-graded time of 8:28:55 (9:47:20 × 0.8665), so she ranks higher in the women's pool despite the slower clock time.
So what time do you need? That is decided on the day. It depends on how many slots the race has, how many men and women start, how fast the rest of your gender's field races once age-graded, and how many athletes ahead of you decline. IRONMAN updates the Kona Standard at the start of each Kona qualifying cycle (August), so check the current table before you run your own numbers.
How does Kona roll-down work, and how do I accept a slot?
Roll-down is the in-person ceremony, often held the day after the race, where automatic slots are offered first and then performance pool slots are offered down the age-graded list until every slot is accepted.
Order of the ceremony
Automatic qualifiers claim their slots at the awards ceremony. The performance pool roll-down follows straight after. In IRONMAN's athlete guides, an athlete's name is called twice; if there is no response or the athlete declines, the slot rolls to the next person, and no slots are allocated after the ceremony. Your race's athlete guide gives the time and place. (IRONMAN Gurye Korea 2026 athlete guide; IRONMAN California WC qualification page)
What to bring
- Photo ID.
- Your IRONMAN Profile login.
- One physical credit card with the full number, expiry date and CVV, to pay the full entry fee. Split payments and cash are not accepted.
Accepted card brands differ by race and by page (for example, some IRONMAN pages exclude American Express, Diners Club and digital wallets), so check your race's athlete guide before you travel. (slot allocation explainer)
If you finished 2nd or 3rd
You have two routes. The automatic slot rolls to you if the athletes ahead of you in your age group decline it. If the winner accepts, your time still counts in your gender's performance pool. One catch: if you are offered the automatic slot and decline it, you will not be offered a second slot in the pool at that race. You can still accept a slot at a later race. (IRONMAN Age Group Qualification)
Can I accept a slot online?
No. IRONMAN's current rules and athlete guides require you to be at the ceremony in person when your name is called. (IRONMAN made one-off retroactive offers in November 2025 when it split the pools; that was not a standing online option.)

Source: IRONMAN 2027 qualifying events, as listed in October 2026. IRONMAN says allocations are subject to change, and more races may be added.
Can you qualify at an IRONMAN 70.3? Rarely. IRONMAN 70.3 races award 70.3 World Championship slots. In the 2026 cycle, IRONMAN 70.3 Hawaii offered 28 Kona age-group slots, and three 70.3 races offered handcycle slots (2026 qualifying events). IRONMAN's IRONMAN 70.3 Hawaii race page now lists the next race for June 5, 2027 and calls it the only IRONMAN 70.3 offering qualifying slots to Kona; IRONMAN has not yet published a slot count for it.
How much does it cost to race Kona?
IRONMAN's 2026 athlete guides list the 2027 World Championship slot fee as $1,834.33 USD including taxes and fees, paid in full when you accept, and the slot cannot be deferred or transferred.
That figure appears in the IRONMAN Gurye Korea and IRONMAN Australia 2026 athlete guides. Check your own race's guide for the amount it lists.
- No deferrals or transfers. A slot is only for the championship you qualified for. (Kona FAQs)
- Refunds. A partial refund is possible only if your withdrawal request is received on or before 45 days before the event. (Kona FAQs)
- Other costs. Flights, lodging, bike shipping, and your qualifying race entry and travel. IRONMAN publishes no figure for these, so budget them yourself.
Are there other ways to get to Kona?
Besides racing for an age-group slot, IRONMAN lists the Kona Legacy Program, IRONMAN Foundation charity bibs, IRONMAN XC slots, and drawings or slots for para and handcycle athletes.
IRONMAN Kona Legacy Program
Legacy is a waitlist, not a drawing, for loyal athletes who have never raced the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona. To apply, you need 12 or more full-distance IRONMAN finishes (70.3 races do not count), at least one full-distance finish in each of the two years before you apply, 12 or more years of IRONMAN-branded racing history, and a full-distance IRONMAN registration in your acceptance year. Professionals are not eligible. IRONMAN says the online application window runs November 29 to December 31 each year, with a $50 fee. Accepted athletes are placed by application timestamp and assigned the next available Kona year, so acceptance year and race year can differ. (IRONMAN Legacy)
IRONMAN Foundation charity bibs
The IRONMAN Foundation offers World Championship entries through charity auctions and its fundraising programs. Its Laulima auction, announced October 2, 2026, includes 2027 IRONMAN World Championship bibs. (IRONMAN Foundation auction)
IRONMAN XC (Xclusive Challenge)
IRONMAN XC is a paid race package with its own slot allocation. For 2027, each full-distance XC qualifying event awards two Kona slots to the fastest age-graded men, one to the fastest age-graded woman, and one PR Challenge slot for the most improved personal record. XC slots cannot be transferred or deferred, and winners must buy the XC World Championship package. IRONMAN lists XC packages at $7,900 USD to approximately $17,000 USD. (XC World Championship slots; XC FAQ)
Para Open and handcycle athletes
For 2026, IRONMAN ran a Para Open Division drawing (5 entries) and a Hawaii State Residents drawing (10 entries); drawn athletes still had to finish an IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 race. IRONMAN has not yet posted 2027 drawings. Handcycle athletes qualify at designated IRONMAN 70.3 races (see the race table above). (IRONMAN drawings)
Is there a general entry drawing? No. IRONMAN's current pages show no general age-group lottery; the only drawings listed are the 2026 Para Open and Hawaii-resident drawings.
How can coaching help you prepare for a Kona qualifying race?
A coach cannot award or promise a Kona slot, but a coach can help with the parts you control: choosing and timing a qualifying race, managing training and recovery load, pacing, and fueling.
Whether an athlete qualifies depends on race-day performance and IRONMAN's qualifying system, and no coach can promise a slot.
- Race selection and timing. Choosing a qualifier that suits your strengths, your calendar and your recovery. Slot counts, the start line's gender mix and who accepts all change on the day, so no race is a sure thing.
- Training and recovery load. At QT2, your coach uses QT2.0, our coaching framework: Critical Power and Critical Speed testing to set your intensities, and StressLogic to decide how much training stress to apply each week around the rest of your life.
- Race execution. Pacing the bike so you can still run, and making decisions when conditions change.
- Fueling. Fueling early enough to protect late-race performance.
- Roll-down logistics. Planning to be at the ceremony with your ID, profile login and card, so a slot that reaches you is one you can take.
QT2 Systems by the numbers:
- 1,000+ athletes coached, as of Sep 30, 2026
- 20+ years of coaching, as of Sep 30, 2026
- 300+ Kona qualifications, as of Sep 30, 2026
- 98% athlete retention, as of Sep 30, 2026

Kona qualification FAQ
Can you qualify for Kona at an IRONMAN 70.3?
Rarely: IRONMAN 70.3 races award slots to the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, not Kona. The exceptions in the 2026 cycle were IRONMAN 70.3 Hawaii, which offered 28 Kona age-group slots, and handcycle slots at three IRONMAN 70.3 races. IRONMAN's 2027 list so far includes a handcycle allocation at IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia, and IRONMAN calls IRONMAN 70.3 Hawaii the only 70.3 offering Kona slots.
What time do I need to qualify for Kona?
There is no official Kona qualifying time. IRONMAN multiplies each finish time by an age-group factor called the Kona Standard and ranks athletes within their gender by that age-graded time. For example, a 9:19:51 finish by a woman aged 40-44 becomes 9:03:00 after applying her factor of 0.9699. The time that earns a slot depends on the field, the number of slots and who accepts on the day.
If I finish 2nd or 3rd in my age group, can I still get a Kona slot?
Yes, in two ways. The automatic slot rolls to 2nd, then 3rd, if the athletes ahead of you decline it, and if the winner accepts, your time still counts in your gender's performance pool. If you are offered the automatic slot and decline it, you will not be offered a second slot in the pool at that race.
Do I have to be at the roll-down ceremony to accept a Kona slot?
Yes. IRONMAN requires you to attend the slot allocation and roll-down ceremony in person and accept when your name is called, with photo ID, your IRONMAN Profile login and full payment by physical credit card. No slots are allocated after the ceremony, so check your race's athlete guide for the time and place.
How much does a Kona slot cost?
IRONMAN's 2026 athlete guides for IRONMAN Gurye Korea and IRONMAN Australia list the 2027 World Championship slot fee as $1,834.33 USD, including taxes and fees. You pay in full by credit card when you accept, so check your own race's athlete guide for the amount it lists. Slots cannot be deferred or transferred.
Can I defer or transfer my Kona slot?
No. IRONMAN says a qualifying slot can only be used for the specific World Championship you qualified for, and deferrals and transfers are not permitted. A partial refund is possible only if your withdrawal request is received on or before 45 days before the event.
How is my age group decided for Kona qualifying?
Your age group is set by your age on December 31 of the year you qualify. That is IRONMAN's rule on its slot allocation page, where an age group is defined by gender and age range, such as Male 25-29 or Female 25-29.
Is the performance pool split between men and women?
Yes, since November 2025. Each qualifying race has a men's pool and a women's pool, sized by each gender's share of eligible age-group starters on race day. Automatic slots that the top three in an age group do not take also stay within that gender's pool.
Which races qualify for the 2027 IRONMAN World Championship?
IRONMAN's 2027 qualifying list currently runs from IRONMAN Tallinn on August 22, 2026, to IRONMAN Western Australia on December 6, 2026. Most races offer 45 to 55 slots, with 100 at IRONMAN Cozumel and 75 at IRONMAN Western Australia. IRONMAN says allocations are subject to change and has not yet posted any 2027-dated qualifiers.
What is the IRONMAN Kona Legacy Program?
It is a waitlist route to Kona for athletes who have never raced the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona and have 12 or more full-distance IRONMAN finishes over 12 or more years, with a full-distance finish in each of the two years before applying. IRONMAN says applications open online November 29 to December 31 each year, with a $50 fee. Accepted athletes are assigned the next available Kona year based on capacity and their place on the waitlist.
Can a coach help me qualify for Kona?
A coach cannot promise a Kona slot, because qualifying depends on race-day performance and IRONMAN's rules. A coach can help with the parts you control: choosing and timing a qualifying race, managing training and recovery load, pacing and fueling. Learn how QT2 approaches long-course racing on our IRONMAN coaching from QT2 page.
